The Spotted Silver Dollar Fish is an attractive, peaceful freshwater fish known for its rounded body, silvery coloration and distinctive dark spotting. Silver Dollars are popular in larger community aquariums because of their active swimming behaviour, schooling nature and impressive appearance.
Spotted Silver Dollars are native to freshwater environments in South America, where they inhabit rivers, tributaries and areas with dense aquatic vegetation. Their natural habitat generally consists of warm, well-oxygenated water.
Depending on the species, Spotted Silver Dollars can reach approximately 15–20 cm in length when fully grown.
Spotted Silver Dollars are primarily herbivorous/omnivorous and should receive a varied diet. Offer quality tropical flakes or pellets together with vegetable-based foods such as spirulina, algae wafers, blanched spinach, zucchini, cucumber and peas. Occasional protein-rich foods such as frozen foods can also be offered as part of a balanced diet.
Spotted Silver Dollars are generally suitable for peaceful community aquariums containing similarly sized fish.
With good water quality, a nutritious varied diet and sufficient swimming space, the Spotted Silver Dollar can be a long-lived and impressive addition to a large freshwater aquarium
