Silver Dollar Fish are popular freshwater tropical fish known for their distinctive round, silvery bodies and peaceful nature. They are active, fast-moving schooling fish that make an excellent addition to larger community aquariums.

Silver Dollars belong to the Serrasalmidae family, which also includes piranhas and pacus. Despite their relationship to these species, Silver Dollars are generally peaceful herbivorous/omnivorous fish and are well suited to community aquariums when kept with appropriately sized tank mates.

Silver Dollar species are native to South America, particularly areas of the Amazon and other major river systems. They are commonly found in rivers, tributaries and flooded forest environments where vegetation and natural food sources are abundant.

Silver Dollars can reach approximately 15–20 cm (6–8 inches) in length, with some species growing larger.

Silver Dollars are generally active schooling fish. They are most comfortable when kept in a group, with 6 or more individuals being a good starting point where aquarium size allows.

Silver Dollars are primarily herbivorous, although they will accept a varied omnivorous diet.

Silver Dollars are relatively hardy & easy to care when provided with good water quality and adequate space.

They are also known for their appetite for vegetation. If you have a heavily planted aquarium, be aware that Silver Dollars may consume tender plants.
