Neon Dwarf Rainbowfish
Neon Dwarf Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia praecox) is a stunning, peaceful freshwater community fish prized for its brilliant metallic blue body and contrasting red or orange fins. Also commonly known as the Dwarf Neon Rainbowfish or Praecox Rainbowfish, this active species is an excellent choice for planted community aquariums.
Neon Dwarf Rainbowfish are native to Indonesia, particularly the freshwater rivers and tributaries of the Mamberamo River system in Papua, New Guinea. They are typically found in clear, flowing waters with vegetation and submerged structures.
Adults generally reach around 6–7 cm in length, making them one of the smaller rainbowfish species.
Neon Dwarf Rainbowfish are peaceful, active schooling fish that should be kept in groups. A group of 4 or more is recommended, with larger groups allowing them to display more natural behaviour and confidence.
They are excellent community fish and can be kept with other peaceful species of a similar size. Males often display more intense colours, particularly when competing for the attention of females.
Good filtration and regular water changes are important. Neon Dwarf Rainbowfish appreciate clean, well-oxygenated water.
Neon Dwarf Rainbowfish are omnivores and readily accept a variety of aquarium foods. Their diet can include high-quality tropical flakes, small pellets, granules and frozen or live foods such as Daphnia or baby brine shrimp.
Feeding a varied, nutritious diet helps maintain their vibrant colours and overall health.
Males are usually more intensely coloured, with stronger blue coloration and brighter red or orange fins. Females tend to be slightly less colourful and may have a more rounded body, particularly when mature.
