The Piraiba Catfish (Brachyplatystoma filamentosum) is one of the largest freshwater catfish species, originating from the Amazon and Orinoco River basins in South America. This true river giant can grow to impressive sizes and is known for its strength, long barbels, and powerful body. First described in the 19th century, it has become a legendary species among monster fish enthusiasts.
Piraibas are carnivorous and require a diet rich in meaty foods such as fish fillets, shrimp, and high-quality carnivore pellets. Due to their size and power, they are best suited for experienced aquarists.
They require clean, well-oxygenated water and strong filtration to thrive. These fish are solitary by nature and should not be housed with much smaller tankmates.
They are extremely rare and highly sought after, with availability subject to seasonal changes. Often, only one or two pieces are available at a time. Due to their rarity, they come with a premium price tag.
