The Pimelodus Pictus Catfish, commonly known as the Pictus Catfish, is a highly active, sleek, and beautifully spotted freshwater species native to the Amazon and Orinoco River basins in South America. It is well-known for its unique black spots, long barbels, and fast-swimming nature, making it a popular choice for aquariums.
First discovered in the early 1800s, this species is part of the Pimelodidae family and thrives in tropical environments with steady water parameters.
Pictus Catfish are omnivorous scavengers, enjoying a varied diet that includes sinking pellets, bloodworms, brine shrimp, and other meaty foods. They will also help clean up leftover food at the bottom of the tank.
This species does best in groups of 2 or more and should not be housed with very small fish, as they may be mistaken for food.
