The Geophagus Surinamensis ,commonly known as the Eartheater Cichlid, is a stunning and peaceful species native to the slow-moving rivers and streams of South America, particularly the Amazon and Suriname regions. These large, elegant cichlids are named "Eartheaters" due to their unique feeding behavior — they sift through substrate with their mouths to extract food, spitting out sand and debris.
Known for their iridescent colors, elongated fins, and graceful swimming patterns, adult Geophagus Surinamensis can grow up to 20–25 cm in captivity. Their shimmering scales often reflect hues of blue, green, and red, especially under the right lighting, making them a showstopper in any large tropical aquarium.
They thrive in well-oxygenated, warm water (26–30°C). On average they display a peaceful temperament which makes them great for mixing, they do best with similarly sized tank mates.
Omnivorous and easy to feed — they accept high-quality pellets, frozen foods (like bloodworms or brine shrimp), and vegetable matter. A varied diet enhances their color and health.
