The Large Tiger Shovelnose Catfish (Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum) is an iconic predatory species native to the Amazon and Orinoco River basins in South America. Recognized for its long, flattened snout and bold black stripes over a silver body, this catfish is both aggressive and visually striking—making it a favorite among monster fish enthusiasts.
Originally described in the 19th century, this species has become widely known in the aquarium trade for its unique appearance and size.
South America – primarily Brazil, Peru, Colombia, and Venezuela in large rivers and tributaries.
Carnivorous – feeds on live or frozen foods such as fish, shrimp, worms, and meaty pellets. Due to its aggressive appetite, tank mates must be chosen carefully.
This species grows very large—often exceeding 90cm in captivity—and requires expert care, and a secure lid due to its strength and agility.
