The Giraffe Catfish (Auchenoglanis occidentalis) is a large, freshwater species native to rivers and lakes throughout Central and West Africa. First described in the early 1800s, it gets its name from the mottled, giraffe-like pattern on its body.
This catfish is omnivorous, feeding on a mix of plant matter, detritus, and small invertebrates. In captivity, they thrive on a varied diet of sinking pellets, frozen foods like bloodworms or brine shrimp, and occasional fresh vegetables.
They require aquariums with strong filtration due to their size and bioload. Giraffe Catfish are hardy and relatively easy to care for, making them ideal for hobbyists.
