The Fisher's Wood Catfish (Trachelyopterus fisheri) is a medium catfish species that is native to Colombia. It is known for its overall mottled coloration and graceful, deliberate manner of swimming. At a typical adult size of up to 11 inches (28 cm).
Feeding is very simple for the Fisher's Wood Catfish. In the wild, it mainly feeds on small invertebrates and fish. In the aquarium, it will accept most live, frozen, and dry meaty foods. It is a voracious eater, so care should be taken not to overfeed.
It is not particularly sensitive, but like many scaleless fish, it will deteriorate from poor water quality and maintenance.
Native to the slow-moving rivers and tributaries of Colombia and parts of northern South America, the Colombian Wood Catfish (from the Trachelyopterus genus) thrives in waters rich in submerged roots and driftwood.
These catfish are omnivores with a strong preference for meaty foods. In the aquarium, they readily accept bloodworms, brine shrimp, blackworms, and sinking carnivore pellets. Supplementing with the occasional veggie wafer or spirulina-based food ensures a balanced diet.
Members of the Auchenipteridae family, Colombian Wood Catfish are also referred to as driftwood or wood catfish. They were first scientifically described in the early 20th century and are known for their shy nature, elongated bodies, and muted tones that blend perfectly with wood and debris.
