They are fish native to the Indian and western Pacific Oceans that have been popular in the aquarium trade in the last 30 years.
The Spotted Scat Scatophagus argus was described by Linnaeus in 1766. The species has a very large distribution, they are common throughout the Indo-Pacific region.
Other names this fish is commonly known by are Argus Fish, Red Scat, Green Scat, Ruby Scat, Common scat, Leopard scat, Butter fish, Spotted Butterfish or Spadefish.
They are scavengers, feeding on algae and feces, hence their name, from Greek skatos meaning "feces" and phagein meaning "eat". Ideal tank mates include: Puffers, Monos, Archers, and other Brackish water fish.
They will readily accept most kinds of foods like flakes, algae, brine shrimp, lettuce and dried seaweed.
